About
My training is in the 18th Century Novel. My dissertation was on how four late 18th/early 19thC British women novelists (Elizabeth Inchbald, Hannah More, Mary Brunton, and Jane Austen) constructed their male characters.
I have since moved time periods, but not theoretical focus: I now work on how modern romance novelists construct their heroes. I'm working on a book called "Alpha Male" about the American romance hero from 1972 through today.
Additional research areas: Jane Austen, of course. I am (humbly) the world's foremost academic expert on military romance author Suzanne Brockmann (not that there's much competition). I also study BDSM romance novels and M/M romance novels (romances about gay men written by women for women).
I am the founder and President of the International Association for the Study of Popular Romance (IASPR).
I received my dissertation from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I currently teach composition and literature at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina.
